Classroom Procedures. The following is the daily classroom procedure, as detailed below.
Upon entering the classroom, cadets will place all personal electronic devices in the amnesty box, proceed to their desk and place all belongings on the floor under their desks, then stand behind their desks at the position of PARADE REST. This must all be completed by the time the tardy bell rings.
To gain control of the flight, the Flight Commander will call the flight to ATTENTION. Note, if the Flight Commander is unavailable, the Flight Sergeant, who will typically stand to the Flight Commander's left, will assume the acting role of Flight Commander. If both the Flight Commander and Flight Sergeant are unavailable, the senior Element Leader will assume these responsibilities.
While standing at ATTENTION, cadets will remain silent and be prepared to begin class immediately at the conclusion of roll call.
From the beginning of the school year through September 30th, then every uniform day for the remainder of the academic year, the Flight Commander will call READY FACE. The entire flight will face towards the American flag and, in unison, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, the Cadet Creed, and sing the first verse of the Air Force song. The Flight Commander will then call READY FRONT, at which point cadets will face their seats. The Flight Commander will call PARADE REST before beginning the roll call.
Beginning on October 1st and continuing throughout the remainder of the academic year, the Flight Commander will keep the flight at the position of ATTENTION and state ELEMENTS REPORT. With the Flight Sergeant holding the attendance sheet, Element Leaders will report to the Flight Commander the attendance of their elements by salute and reporting statement. For example, "Sir/Ma'am, 1st Element all cadets are present and accounted for with the exception of Cadets Oak and Pine." Upon completion of the roll call, the Flight Commander will turn to the SASI or ASI, render a salute and report class attendance. For example, "Sir/Ma'am, Alpha Flight is all present and accounted for." After the roll is reported, the Flight Commander will put the flight at PARADE REST and conduct any flight business (e.g. read the daily announcements, assign flight management tasks, etc.). Finally, the Flight Commander will direct the flight to sit down by giving the command, "at ease. You may be seated." Cadets will then sit down and refrain from talking. The Flight Commander and Flight Sergeant will then proceed to their seats and class will begin.
Cadets arriving tardy will stand at the entrance of the classroom and request permission to join the class when recognized by the Flight Commander. Roll call will not be stopped to recognize tardy cadets. Cadets without a written pass to class will be written up as tardy in accordance with school policy.
Unexcused absences and excessive tardiness will negatively affect Top Flight and Outstanding Flight competition scores and the cadet's course grade. Being on time and attending school are qualities that will ensure success in school and later in all aspects of the workplace and in life.
At approximately three to five minutes before the CCR bell rings, or when directed by the instructors, the Flight Commander will direct the class to come to their seats for dismissal. Cadets will stop class work and put classroom materials away. Cadets will clear their desks, pick up any litter in the immediate vicinity of their desks, align their desks and chairs with others in the elements, and prepare to stand for dismissal. The Flight Sergeant will check that all trash is picked up and the desks and chairs are aligned.
Once complete, the Flight Commander will call the flight to ATTENTION and to prepare for dismissal. Once the CCR bell rings, and for the end of class bell for everyone else, the Flight Commander will give the command "Flight, you are dismissed." At this time, cadets will retrieve their personal belongings and depart the classroom in an orderly manner.
The Flight Commander or, in their absence, the Flight Sergeant is responsible for the conduct of their flight during the class period. All cadets will abide by the Flight Commander's or Flight Sergeant's instructions at all times.
SASI/ASI office reporting procedures. Office reporting procedures are as follows --
If the door is open, come to ATTENTION, knock once on the door frame, and wait for acknowledgement to enter.
If asked whom you need to see, answer. Otherwise, report to the SASI or ASI, whoever cleared you to enter.
Once you enter the office, position yourself in the front center of the instructor's desk. Approximately one foot back from the center of the desk at the position of ATTENTION, salute and state, "Sir/Ma'am, Cadet (name) reports."
Hold the salute until returned.
Follow the instructors directions (e.g., AT EASE, PARADE REST, etc.).
State the nature of your visit, clearly and concisely.
When your visit is finished, come to ATTENTION, salute, and ask, "will that be all Sir/Ma'am?"
When salute is returned, execute an ABOUT FACE before exiting directly and safely.
Curriculum Guide. Courses include classroom academics, leadership, discipline, citizenship, management, and drill among others. AFJROTC provides cadet uniforms, insignia, and awards at no cost to the student; however, these items must be signed for upon issue and are the responsibility of the parents if not returned professionally dry cleaned (in the case of the uniforms) at the end of the academic year. Other features of the program include the annual dining in, the semi-formal to formal military ball and awards night. All three of these events are mandatory and attendance and performance at each will count as an all-or-nothing test grade as well as a uniform grade.
Grading Scale. Aerospace Science Instructors will use the following grading system and assign numeric grades, all of which are unweighted: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 71-79 = C, 70 = D, 69 or below = F.
Cadets receive an average of four days of academic instruction and one day of wellness training each week. Of the four days of academic instruction, these days are typically evenly split between aerospace science instruction and leadership instruction.
In accordance with Department of Defense regulations, a cadet must wear his/her uniform once a week and for the entire school day. If a cadet refuses to comply with this directive, he/she must receive a failing grade for that week's uniform grade. Monday is the designated uniform day for GA-958 (unless changed by the instructor). The only uniform make-up day is Tuesday of the same week and the highest score will be 80 percent. After Tuesday, the uniform grade is a 0. If a cadet is not present on uniform day, he or she must wear the uniform the first day they return to class in order to gain full credit. The highest score is an 80 percent on the second day back, and after the second day the uniform grade is a 0. Once a cadet has missed uniform inspection two times during a semester, the SASI or ASI will write an email to the parents/guardians to let them know the cadet cannot miss any more uniform days for the semester. If the cadet misses a third uniform day, the SASI will recommend disenrollment from JROTC for failure to complete the cadet contract, failure to maintain acceptable standards, failure to wear the uniform three unexcused times in a semester, inaptitude or indifference to AFJROTC training, failure to maintain personal appearance and uniform standards, and undesirable character traits. Note that if a cadet was in uniform during the week to participate in an event such as a color guard or honor guard detail, that/those cadet(s) will be exempt from having to wear the uniform on Mondays for inspection.
