Curriculum-in-Action (CIA), otherwise known as a field trip, is an integral part of the JROTC cadet experience as it brings classroom learning to life and shows the practicality of the lessons learned in the classroom. In fact, according to AFJROTCI 36-2010 (click here) they are a requirement of each JROTC unit that intends to remain in good standing with the Air Force. Paragraph 7.8.1 of 36-2010 states, “units must take a minimum of one CIA trip per academic term with a minimum of 20 percent of the academic term cadets participating.” Further, when units are inspected, this is an item that Air Force inspectors will evaluate. Meeting standards is one CIA trip a year where 20 percent to 49 percent of cadets participate. An exceeding standards grade is obtained when a unit conducts more than one CIA trip a year and has more than 50 percent of the eligible cadets participating. Therefore, at GA-958, we intend to exceed the standard by having multiple CIA trips with participation from more than 50 percent of the corps.
Attending field trips is a privilege of being a cadet in JROTC that will be reserved for those in good standing. Further to the above, paragraph 7.8.3 of 36-2010 states that cadets must be in good academic and disciplinary standing to be eligible to participate in CIAs. To this end, local policy on what constitutes good academic and disciplinary standing is defined here:
Good academic standing consists of two components, both of which have to be met for a cadet to be in good academic standing. First, cadets must have a passing grade of 70 or higher in all courses by 15 days prior to the CIA. Second, good academic standing is also defined as having a 90 or higher for a cadet’s uniform grade for the entire year as of 15 days prior to the CIA.
Good disciplinary standing is defined as having zero out-of-school suspensions and no more than two in-school suspensions before the date of departure for the CIA.
