Responsibilities. The SASI will promote cadets, assign cadets to jobs, demote cadets and reassign cadets and cadet positions. The incoming and outgoing cadet corps commanders will submit staff position recommendations to the SASI and ASI who will consider and approve all key staff and commander assignments.
Academic and leadership performance is based on how well the cadet performs on homework, quizzes, exams, class projects, and class presentations. Timely turn in of projects and assignment completion are also factors for promotion. Does the cadet seek out and work well with others? Does the cadet actively pursue physical fitness? Also, cadets working with others as well as their physical fitness are other factors.
Leadership and management is gauged by cadet performance of duties, consideration of others, and ability to utilize available resources. A cadet’s ability to motivate and delegate work is observed.
Leadership Development Requirements (LDRs). The degree a cadet participates in cadet activities within the constraints of after school employment and other obligations, (volunteer for community, school, and corps service activities, as well as other school activities).
Responsibility and Conduct. This area is by far one of the most respected areas. Responsibility in all tasks and undertaking (ex. follow rules, punctuality and accept their own action or inspection) shows internal motivation and care. Appropriate conduct is a character trait where a cadet gives nonverbal signals that they treat all people equally and without reservation. Examples of appropriate conduct are ensuring training, being a positive role model, having a good attitude, and assisting those in need.
Uniform Wear. A cadet must wear the uniform when required. Improper uniform wear and/or failure to wear the uniform one or more times as required by the program directives disqualifies the offending cadet from promotion consideration for the quarterly grading period and any other activities scheduled (i.e. field trips). If the infraction occurs after the promotion cycle, the cadet will be ineligible for promotion during the next promotion cycle and may result in demotion and/or a failing grade in AFJROTC.
Cadets transferring from another JROTC program may assume their permanent grade after confirming with their previous unit. The SASI or ASI will request their cadet records from the losing unit. Upon receipt of their cadet records, the SASI or ASI will evaluate the cadet’s record and permanently award the appropriate grade and position.
Stripes for Exceptional Performers (STEP) Program. Outstanding cadets may be promoted past normal advancement from exceptional performance. Cadet staff may submit STEP nominations to the SASI up to two weeks prior to the end of the school year. Only one recommended, truly deserving cadet can be proposed to the SASI with a detailed justification for STEP considerations. Any cadet promoted in this fashion is ineligible for future STEP promotions.
